Special Interest Group on Monochrome Photography - About

Published: Wednesday, January 14, 2026

Moderator: Tim Meadows

In summary: The Monochrome SIG is all about visualizing in black and white and successfully creating impactful images from your original color file

  • Members may introduce a photographer of interest and discuss their work
  • The core portion of the meeting is reviewing member-submitted images with a focus on effective workflow and improvement tips
  • 2nd Monday of the month, or the Monday following competition night at 7:30-9
  • Zoom meeting link is sent out prior to each meeting

The primary objective is to share our images and get the valuable comments and feedback from the rest of the group in an effort to make better images. Included in this is the sharing of workflow and techniques we use in post-processing. For this section of the meeting, please follow these guidelines:

  • submit a “before” (out of camera) and an “after” (post-processed monochrome) image saved using the following sizing guidelines (1920 pixels on the long edge). If your email program gives you the option, make sure to send the attached images in “full” or “large” size. Not doing so will likely send me a very small thumbnail image that will not project well for group viewing.
  • These images need to be sent to me no later than noon on the day of the meeting. Late submittals may not be included.
  • You may select two “after” treatments if you want the group to give input on alternatives.
  • If you have been given feedback on an “after” image in prior meetings that led to your re-processing that image, you may also share that work. In that case, please submit the original “after” image and the reworked image.
  • remember that comments and critiques should always point out something that you like about an image, followed by positive, insightful suggestions designed to help the maker improve their final image.
