Creating Still Life Images

Overview

Great still Images require a creative juxtaposition of items that tell a story and great lighting. Larry will share his tips for getting started with still life images. He’ll also share some of his secrets for collecting items suitable for a still life. 

Objectives

  1. Learn about the history of still life, and where one goes for inspiration.
  2. Understand the basics of composition in still life
  3. Learn how to use lighting to create a mood in your photography 

Workshop Format

This is an in-person workshop, to be held at Shir Hadash. Registration is limited to 15 participants. Lunch is on your own. (More information to follow for registrants.)

The workshop will have three parts:

  1. Lecture / demonstration (~1.5 hrs)
  2. Still life creation: Participants will work together in groups to compose and light a still life. (late AM and early PM)
  3. Post processing images (as a group)

Participants should bring: 

  1. A digital camera with a “normal” zoom lens, with focal length between 50- 120 mm. Short telephoto lens 120-180 or a 70-200 zoom can also be used. These are all full frame cameras, adjust for your camera format.
  2. Tripod and cable release.
  3. Laptop computer to process images.
  4. OPTIONAL: Lighting equipment, such as small strobes that can be used off camera.
  5. OPTIONAL: Reflectors, scrims, diffusers.
  6. OPTIONAL: Things to photograph. Larry will bring a treasure trove of items, including backgrounds.

About the Instructor

Larry Shapiro’s lifelong passion with photography began after he eschewed the microscope at age 11 for a 35 mm film camera. Well versed in the history of photography, Larry is skilled in three-color gum prints and the bromoil process as well as all modern digital techniques. His artistic approach won him the Man Ray Prize for Experimental Photography in 1995. Larry is currently the President of LGSCC and a frequent competition winner for his still life photography.
