UCSC Arboretum  -  Hummingbird photography

MARCH 18       8:30am

We are going on a Field Trip for the Birds (and the flowers and plants) at the UC Santa Cruz Arboretum on March 18.  Lucky us! We will have one of our bird master photographers, Mercury Freedom, lead us in getting more out of our time there.

We will meet at the entrance to the Arboretum on March 18th at 8:30 just prior to opening. Admission is $5.00 cash or check. The arboretum is 135 acres and attracts many birds, including hummingbirds. Mercury has shared some magnificent photos he has taken there.

The Arboretum environment does facilitate getting close to the hummingbirds.  However, since they are small, it is best to have a telephoto of at least 135mm and be comfortable using your camera’s burst mode.

Do join your fellow Camera Club Members to the Arboretum. While the Arboretum is on the UC Santa Cruz campus, the city of Santa Cruz is close by if you wish on your own to find a place for lunch or a snack.

To register, contact the trip leader Mercury Freedom

There will be pre and post Zoom Meetings: click on the links below for the Zoom invitation.

Pre-Mtg  March 15 at 7pm

  • Turn right onto Bay Street (there's a traffic light) going up to the UC campus
  • Turn left at the High St. traffic light at the base of campus (don't go in the main entrance)
  • Stay on High Street for approx 1/2 mile, the entrance to the Garden is to your right
  • If you arrive at the West entrance to campus, you have gone too far

Meet in the parking lot at the Arboretum; …they officially open at 9, but the gate’s been open earlier though it is possible that we may have to wait for a short time.
